Presentation Synopsis
HM9: Creating a Lasting Corporate Culture of Caring, Resilience and Tenacity

During Mr Ng’s tenure as Executive Director of Pan-United in 1994, he spearheaded the transformation of a cottonfield alongside China’s Yangtze River into a leading international port serving eastern and central China. In 2017, the burgeoning port business called Xinghua Port was successfully listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. In 2018, Xinghua Port suffered a serious setback from a safety incident involving casualties. Through management determination, backed by solid staff support, the port overcame the crisis and became even stronger in the process.

In midst of the pandemic, Mr Ng again successfully divested the flourishing business entity to the PRC State-owned Zhuhai Port Group, which has retained Mr Ng to this day as a non-executive director for his wealth of management insights and expertise. Mr Ng attributes the port’s ability to weather rough times to the strong corporate culture created from the very beginning: of caring for its people, of building resilience, and instilling a spirit of perseverance. Today, the port continues to prosper through the effort of many of the original port’s management and staff, which remain as long-service employees.
