Biographical Sketch

Dr Piotr Chlebicki
is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Infectious Diseases of Singapore General Hospital (SGH).  After graduation from Poland's Medical Academy of Warsaw, he completed his residency in Internal Medicine in USA and specialised in Infectious Diseases in Singapore.

In addition to his busy clinical practice, Dr. Piotr is in charge of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) in SGH. He is a member of the National Antimicrobial Taskforce and he is working with the Ministry of Health, Singapore on the implementation of IT solutions for ASP.

Dr. Piotr participates in research projects, investigating prevention and therapy of infections caused by multi-drug resistant bacteria. He also participates in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in SGH.

Synopsis

ERM 3 - Antimicrobial Stewardship Program [ASP] – What ASP can do for Hospital and what
Hospital can do for ASP

Antimicrobial stewardship includes not only limiting inappropriate use but also optimizing antimicrobial selection, dosing, route, and duration of therapy to maximize clinical cure or prevention of infection while limiting the unintended consequences, such as the emergence of resistance, adverse drug events, and cost.

Some physicians (at least initially) perceive Antimicrobial Stewardship Programmes (ASPs) as interference and an attempt to limit their autonomy. For a successful ASP, consensus building, with the support of administration and local providers is essential, with focus on collaborating in the safety and care of their patients rather than a policing role.

ASPs may also result in cost savings but these savings are more likely to be due to improved quality of care (e.g. shorter length of stay) rather than simply from the reduced drug expenditure.

The support and collaboration of hospital administration, medical staff, leadership, and local providers in the development and maintenance of ASPs is essential for effective prevention of healthcare associated infections (HAIs).

In this talk Dr Piotr will explain how both ASPs and hospital management can benefit from such collaboration.
