Synopsis

SC 7 - Delivering Results: How Can Patients Benefit From Competition?

PHARMAC has brought about substantial changes in the value being delivered from pharmaceutical technologies in the New Zealand health system. Since 1993 it has developed, implemented, and adapted many ground-breaking approaches which have at times been the cause of much discussion in the local and international community. In this session Mr Crausaz will discuss the approaches that PHARMAC has taken, and the impacts it has had in implementing its policies in respect of medicines. The session will focus on how PHARMAC uses competition to enable improved access to medicines in the New Zealand context.

SC 15  - Extending the Value Proposition: Building New Functions from Existing Competencies

PHARMAC’s competencies in managing community-based medicines in the New Zealand health system are well established. In this session Mr Crausaz will discuss the diversification of the organisation into additional areas including the national hospital formulary, the national vaccines programme and its emerging work in applying its business model to medical devices. Managing change for patients is necessary for PHARMAC to use its competition-based model to deliver value to the New Zealand health system – this session will discuss how the organisational and national system change is being implemented to deliver results across these additional technology areas.
