Ms Crystal Lee started in TTSH with a core function of facilitating inpatient visits and providing directional assistance to visitors through a team of 34 ground staff. This role allowed me to manage a team of 6 direct reports, as an Executive level at full spectrum; Ms Lee hired, assigned the new joiner a buddy for OJT and conducted competency assessments according to the training framework unique to the department. I held regular team meetings to align/discuss operational issues, and meted out disciplinary action when necessary. The close bonds with my team as their new RO yielded high staff morale with a strong sense of camaraderie in less than 6 months.
In line with the continuous improvement notion and learning culture, the department saw a need to be future-ready where staff were able to assist those who needed more than just being pushed around in a wheelchair. This led Ms Lee to build a new training program which became an extension of a staff’s learning journey and a supplement to the existing framework. It was the first time a Support Ops unit collaborated with in-house Occupational Therapists for the purpose of learning safe manual handling. As the project was a training element where no budget allocated was allicated, I applied for a training funding by e2i. All staff are now competent to safely transfer patients to and fro cars, chairs and wheelchairs. Some of which became Trainers to maintain a sustainable training model, thus up-skilling staff and ultimately providing better and safer care.
