Presentation Synopsis
Empathy & Communication – Reducing Risk

The talk will focus on the factors that impact patient satisfaction in relation to the clinical consult, and how to prevent and minimise risk arising from patient unhappiness. We need to be aware of the predisposing and precipitating factors that drive patient complaints and claims, and to avoid them. Communication factors and concepts that will enhance the doctor-patient relationship will be discussed. The power of empathy will be looked at. The regulatory, legal and other basis on which clinicians may be penalised will be reviewed.
