Biographical Sketch

Mr Bruce Holstien
has served as the CEO of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System since 2011. Prior to this, he was the CEO of the six-hospital Spohn Health System in Texas and also as Senior Vice President of Sentara Health in Virginia.  He holds a Bachelors of Science in Health Administration and an MBA. 

Mr Holstien is one of the few executives in his field to have worked in the not-for-profit, for-profit and government sectors of health and  served in senior posts in the hospital, medical group and insurance industries. His father served in the US Navy Medical Corp as a Hospital Administrator and his family roots tie back to the 1700’s to Edgefield County, SC. He has worked in nearly every department of a hospital beginning as a volunteer at the age of 14 and his first paying job at the age of 16 washing dishes in a hospital dietary department.

Other than the major duties of his day job, Mr Holstien is determined to help revolutionize the current approach to clinical trials to match the realities of molecular medicine; thereby increasing novel treatment access to underrepresented populations as well as speed up the rate of discovery for new therapies. 

Synopsis

HM 7 - Journey to Service Excellence 

Mr Holstien discuss how to build an accountable organisation that excels in customer satisfaction. From the proper measurement systems, the importance of the customer's perspective and how their perspective often varies from the caregiver, to management's role in setting and directing systems process to ensure consistency. He will use the experience of Spartanburg Health Systems' journey and results as an example.


HM 8 - First Do No Harm


The worst moment for any provider of care or the leader of a health institution is learning that harm has come to one of their patients. Understanding the cause and effects of patient injury and how to move your organisation forward to zero events is the aim of this session. We will explore the nature and cause of patient harm and identify the best practices used to eliminate and prevent adverse events. Experience across three health systems will be used as examples.
